WP24 Objectives

• To draw upon a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives in order to examine the interplay of work and family in the changing European societies taking into account the different historic, economic, policy and cultural contexts
• To apply a life-course approach to the changing configurations of resources, values and behaviours.
• To explore the practical implications of the different welfare regimes.
• To offer policy recommendations.

WP24 Description of Work

The work started with a planning meeting. At this stage the team identified possible bridges to other CINEFOGO work packages.
The second stage consists of the data collection and analysis required for the publication project. The work package also builds upon a recent FP5 research project ‘Transitions: Gender, Parenthood and the Changing European Workplace: Young Adults Negotiating the Work-Family Boundary’ and the European Quality of Life project by Claire Wallace. The second study applied a quantitative perspective while the first project used a qualitative perspective. Both involved a life-course approach and considered the gender differences in experiences, meanings and consequences of individual strategies to combine work and family. Other relevant research such as the European Social Survey Round 2 and WORKCARE project under FP6 were considered as well. This stage ensured the cooperation between senior scholars and PhD students.
The third stage of the work package was to organise a workshop bringing together scholars from CINEFOGO and outside the network. The proposed papers that could become part of the edited collection were distributed beforehand and presented by discussants at the workshop. This was followed by an open discussion aiming to identify the contributions that could become part of the edited collection.
The fourth stage consists of an editorial meeting with the purpose of editing a book and produce the briefing paper with policy recommendations.
Mobility: Doctoral student Neli Demireva (NEC) to visit the University of Aberdeen for one month to work on a comparative paper about the patterns of work-life balance in Europe.
