The Department of Political Science at the Faculty of International Relations of the University of Economics in Prague (Czech Republic) teaches both undergraduate and graduate students (PhD. Programme). The staff of the Department comprises  three Professors, three Associate Professors, three assistants with PhDs, and an assistant without a PhD. Moreover, there are five internal and 10 external PhD students.  It should be added that the Faculty of International Relations is one of the two faculties in the Czech Republic whose scientific board can appoint professors in political science.

Its main areas of research focus on the problems of civil society, processes of European integration, European constitutionalism, comparative politics, and transitions towards democracy.  Most recently a project has been undertaken on radical right wing movements in the Czech Republic in a theoretical and comparative West European perspective.  

The academic staff of the Department comprises 12 scholars who are organized around three main research areas: of the aesthetics of the individual art forms;  interdisciplinary aesthetics, and cultural theory and cultural analysis/questions of modern identity formation.

 The researchers have academic backgrounds in the humanities and in the sociology of culture and they contribute to national and international networks of research and teaching. In co-operation with other departments of aesthetics, the Department of Aesthetics and Culture hosts an interdisciplinary Ph.D. school that addresses questions of aesthetics and modern culture. Recent activities undertaken in co-operation with Ph.D. schools in the Nordic countries and Germany have addressed the issue of borderlines of aesthetics and the current tendency towards aestheticizing politics and everyday life. Furthermore, the Department is responsible for a full academic programme that includes a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree.

About Vladimira Dvorakova

from the University of Economics in Prague

Professor Vladimira Dvorakova, Dr., is Chief of the Political Science Department of the Faculty of International Relations, University of Economics, Prague (Czech Republic). Her main research interests lie in the fields of comparative politics, civil society and issues of transition towards democracy.

Dr. Dvorakova has co-authored five monographs and textbooks and lectured at numerous conferences abroad, including Boston (MIT), Los Angeles, and New York (NYU). She is the Czech co-ordinator of the East European Constitutionalism Project that is organized by the American Council of Learned Societies and sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trust. Dr. Dvorakova is President of the Czech Political Science Association, Vice president of the International Political Science Association (IPSA), as well as Chair of the Task Force for Eastern Europe of LASA. Dr. Dvorakova is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Politologicka revue.

She has most recently published on civil society in the Czech Republic, transition processes and right-wing movements.
